We recently did a redesign on the Bands That Jam.com website. We used the “NEWS” theme from orgranic themes. The client was looking for a magazine style theme with the ability to feature different categories on the home page. They also really liked the ability to post “breaking news” in the scrolling marquee.

After spending several days with the iPad I have to admit I’m extremely impressed. As a news and technology junkie I was glad to get my hands on an iPad 3G.  Folks let me tell you the latest from Apple truly is evolutionary. Think about it for the first time in what 30 years we finally have the first computer without a mouse and keyboard.

I rarely use my laptop since getting an iPhone several years ago. The only time it would come with me is when I would travel. I do a lot of my emailing, news reading, and tweeting on my iPhone. Since dropping it into the toilet I’ve since gone to the Google Nexus One phone. While I appreciate Googles openness, multitasking, and widgetized home screens I’m glad to have an Apple device back in my arsenal. The main reason for this is fit, finish, and the overall Apple polish. Even the Apple haters have to admit touch screens from Apple are the best out there.

The first thing I did after receiving the iPad was pick up the Apple iPad Case from the Apple store here in Buffalo, NY. The reason I purchased this case was 1) obviously to protect the case but 2) because it provides functionality to the device. For example with the Apple case I can tilt it up so it’s at a good angle for typing. I can also stand it up on either the long or the short side. This is great for sharing videos with friends watching TV.

Here’s a list of a a few apps that I’ve enjoyed using. All of these apps are available in the app store.

News Rack: As a news junkie the fist thing I did was find an app that has Google Reader support. One of the things people need to realize about the iPad is it’s all about getting the iPad experience. What I mean by that is to fully appreciate and get the most out of the iPad you need use iPad specific apps. News Rack is one of these. It gives you a sweet navigation page on the left hand side and article preview on the right. You also have the ability to star (favorite an article to share with your Google Reader friends) and to share with Facebook, Twitter, Instapper, and other social media sites.

Early Edition:This is another great iPad specific app for news junkies. This app takes your news feeds and lays it out in a custom newspaper style layout complete with page flick. According to the developers Google Reader support is on it’s way and should be here before the end of May.

Gowalla vs Four Square on the iPad: In addition to the SXSW award for best mobile app in 2010 Gowalla wins the initial iPad app war as well. While Four Square seems to be ignoring the iPad for the time being Gowalla has embraced it with an iPad ready app that displays full screen and in landscape mode. Viewing local places on the map has never looked better. You can still use the old Four Square iPhone app on the iPad but it’s going to be in a small window (without landscape mode) or pixelated if you hit the full screen button. For now Gowalla has made a fan of me. I’ll be checking in there more as a result of this.

Sobees: This excellent 3rd party Facebook App displays your Facebook feed in an organized magazine/newspaper style layout. You have your friends status updates on the left, friends links on the right, and YouTube playing from the app. Rumor has it OS 4.0 will have a native Facebook App. Probably one of hte coolest apps for the iPad.

RDP Lite: Remote Desktop Client to connect to Windows machines from your MAC. This comes in really handy. Just yesterday I was installing software for a professor across campus remotely from my iMAC but I had to leave and run to a meeting. I grabbed the iPad went to the meeting, connected to the WI-FI and remoted into the professors machine in just a few seconds. While my co-workers were searching for power outlets and unpacking their laptops I was already logged and working  in a matter of seconds. With the iPad boot times and 2 hour battery life are worries of the past.

The Weather Channel. Great example of a custom iPad app that delivers weather in a unique experience. Animated icons, 3 hour radar forecasts, and visualy stunning.

Box Car: Wouldn’t it be nice if people could @reply you on twitter instead of sending you

text messages? Well now you can. Introducing Box Car. An app for OS3 that will notify you via popup on the iPad when someone @replies you in Twitter. Also support for DMs.

Zillow: Regardless of if your in the market for a new home or not Zillow is one of the coolest apps for any GPS enable phone. Zillow shows you all the homes in your neighborhood that are for sale, or have been sold recently. It even tell you estimated values for homes that aren’t on the market. This iPad ready app delivers a sweet home shopping experience complete with sattelite  images, photos, and detailed listing information.
